To say this novella got to me would be an understatement! Kealan has easily cemented himself as one of my top favorite authors! This story is horrifying and chilling in so many ways. I have to add, there is mention of abuse in this story, so a trigger warning for anyone who can't read about that."...they have their backs turned away from the street, away from me and the nightmare that is mine alone. They stand frozen in place, staring forward. I know they are not looking at anything, and that is the point, because looking at nothing means they're not looking at me, not bearing witness to the atrocity. And if they can't see it, they can't be responsible for whatever comes of it."
This story is told from the perspective of Gillian, our "Jill" of this story. After years suffering at her father's hand, then losing her "Jack" when her little brother dies, it's understandable that Gillian has been left with what can be seen as extreme PTSD. Now married with 2 children, Gillian is suffering from insomnia and nightmares that merge into hallucinations, leaving her familial and marital relationships strained to the max. As the story's perspectives jump between the present and extremely twisted nightmares, Gillian tries to come to terms with her situation before she loses even more. The monster that haunted her childhood is a constant terror, and with her mind set on blaming the monster, Gillian sets out to try and fix things her way. Things escalate quickly, and we see the damage mental illness and childhood trauma can cause.
A fantastically creepy start, with a hell of a finish, this novella is edge of your seat, wtf is going on, did that just really happen, moment after moment. Kealan has taken horrifying events (abuse) and thrown in a worst nightmare situation that can come with suffering mental illness. What is real, and how far do you go to stop the bad things that tore your life apart from taking everything away?
I highly recommend Kealan's work for anyone who is looking for disturbing horror that seeps into your brain and never let's go.

My heart rate started speeding up halfway through and just kept going up and up as I kept reading. By the end, I had to get up and walk around and calm myself. My heart rate has now settled back to a semblance of normal.<br />Is this novel scary? Is it disturbing and unerving in the extreme? Oh yeah!<br />Partaking of someone's slow descent into a very lucid madness and witnessing the horrid tragedy that results is always frightening but in this case, it is downright unsettling!<br />Anyone who has ever thought they were going crazy and were able to pull back and notice how distorted their perspective on the world became during the episode will be shaken in witnessing someone undergo this descent and never pull back from it.<br />Wow!<br/> I perused some of the other reviews written for this novel before writing mine and was not surprised to find a myriad of differing opinions. This seems to be a slightly different realm for Mr. Burke, more cerebral, more like one person's perceptions, more delving into maddness v. reality. I thought this method worked brilliantly because Gillian, the story teller relates her story in a series of dreams, visions, what she thinks or sees as reality, and questioning her hold on sanity. You never quite know which fork in the road you are taking, but it is a bumpy, glorious, scary ride nevertheless. Gillian has so many issues, with her father, her husband, her dead brother, her children, that you don't quite see where the story is headed until you are smack in the middle of the outcome. It leaves the reader guessing as to what was true and what was simply perceived. It is horror on a different level and I loved the book.<br/> 4.5 stars.<br />This is another amazing horror story by Kealan Patrick Burke. I have not read a bad one yet. You will never think of clothes-hangers the same again. This dude puts you right in the horror of each scene with his words. I could say a lot of things here, but just go read anything this man writes, you won't be sorry. Or maybe you will.....😈😈<br/> I once believed that a good book had to be a long book. You know, over five hundred pages; up around there. This mindset came from a near-constant diet of King and McCammon, Straub and early Koontz. Then I stumbled upon the likes of Rick Hautala, Scott Nicholson, Jack Ketchum, and, most recently (last year, to be exact), Kealan Patrick Burke. Sure, a few of their books are longer, but I believe that their best work is well under the 500 page mark. Kealan Patrick Burke's JACK & JILL feels like a full-length novel. The character development is on point. The descent into madness is vacuum-like, sucking you down into the belly of the piece, and, once you're there, you'll want to dig deeper and scrabble to get out, all at the same time.<br /><br />JACK & JILL is quintessential horror. Burke pulls no punches. The dream sequences alone are worth the price of admission. Burke managed to create a monster so terrifying that I might swear off cellophane ANYTHING for a while. I can still hear the crinkling plastic.<br /><br />The book touches on such tragedies as the death of a sibling, child molestation, and mental illness. If you cringed at the mention of any of those things, you might want to skip this book. This is, hands down, Burke's darkest story yet.<br /><br />Now, about the ending. You might become unglued. You might just scream at your . Kealan Patrick Burke is a dark magician, highly-skilled in sleight-of-hand. He'll make you believe that quarter's been behind your ear the entire time.<br/> Another day, another KPB novella. After this book was recommended as my next Burke read, i dove right into it. As distasteful as the subject matter was, Burke again gives a hauntingly vivid tale, with the characterizations and storylines that make him one of the best horror writers today. The fear for the characters is ratcheted up until the reader is about to explode, then Burke gut-punches you with a twist you will never see coming. This was an amazing read, and one all horror fans should get to reading immediately.<br/> To say this novella got to me would be an understatement! Kealan has easily cemented himself as one of my top favorite authors! This story is horrifying and chilling in so many ways. I have to add, there is mention of abuse in this story, so a trigger warning for anyone who can't read about that.<br /><br />"...they have their backs turned away from the street, away from me and the nightmare that is mine alone. They stand frozen in place, staring forward. I know they are not looking at anything, and that is the point, because looking at nothing means they're not looking at me, not bearing witness to the atrocity. And if they can't see it, they can't be responsible for whatever comes of it."<br /><br />This story is told from the perspective of Gillian, our "Jill" of this story. After years suffering at her father's hand, then losing her "Jack" when her little brother dies, it's understandable that Gillian has been left with what can be seen as extreme PTSD. Now married with 2 children, Gillian is suffering from insomnia and nightmares that merge into hallucinations, leaving her familial and marital relationships strained to the max. As the story's perspectives jump between the present and extremely twisted nightmares, Gillian tries to come to terms with her situation before she loses even more. The monster that haunted her childhood is a constant terror, and with her mind set on blaming the monster, Gillian sets out to try and fix things her way. Things escalate quickly, and we see the damage mental illness and childhood trauma can cause.<br /><br />A fantastically creepy start, with a hell of a finish, this novella is edge of your seat, wtf is going on, did that just really happen, moment after moment. Kealan has taken horrifying events (abuse) and thrown in a worst nightmare situation that can come with suffering mental illness. What is real, and how far do you go to stop the bad things that tore your life apart from taking everything away?<br /><br />I highly recommend Kealan's work for anyone who is looking for disturbing
