REWRITTEN FOR EBOOK PUBLICATION WITH NEW MATERIAL. Smith and Trowbridge describe the flavor of their five-book space opera Exordium as a cross between Star Wars and Dangerous Liaisons with a touch of the Three Stooges. With its fast-moving blend of humor and horror, of high-tech skiffy and the deep places of the human heart, The Phoenix in Flight launches the reader into a complex, multi-layered universe as Brandon nyr-Arkad, dissolute youngest son of the ruler of the Thousand Suns, abandons the life of Service planned for him and flees into the lawless Rift. Only slowly does he discover that the world he rejected now lies in smoking ruins as the ritual vengeance of Jerrode Eusabian against Brandon’s father, twenty years in preparation, culminates in an explosion of interstellar violence. With both his brothers dead and his father the Panarch imprisoned, Brandon becomes the Panarchy's last hope.

When I first read this series on its first release I was caught up in a story the likes of which I had never seen before, and have never seen since. It stands as one of the only epic series I have ever read more than just once; seven times, in fact. Only Tad Williams' 'Memory, Sorrow, & Thorn' series has ever come close with five full reads.

The Exordium series is meatier than lightweight Star Wars, it leaves Star Trek lost deep, deep in its shadow. By comparison the Dune series is a bag of dusty lint.

Definitely a must read for any fan of SciFi epics, space operas, or just a deep story.

NOW.... Now I have a reason to finally buy a Kindle/Nook. I have something truly worthy of putting on it; forever.

The Phoenix in Flight Exordium Book 1 eBook Sherwood Smith Dave Trowbridge Reviews

found about this book from scalzi. it was amazing and was very glad the offered this a discount price now i will go and purchase the rest of the series
A great space opera that hurtles forward with action, humor and suspense.

8 more words required. 4 more words required.
One of my favorite space operas of all time. The writing is tight, it is well plotted and the storytelling is top notch. Memorable characters both heroes and villains, and a few ambiguous bad guys you love to hate. so happy this is out on kindle. I wore out the paperbacks.
This unique series has long been out of print and that's a shame. I was so happy to see that they were able to find a way to bring it back into availability as I have long since read my paper copies into non-existance.

The Phoenix in Flight is the first part of a 5 book series that explores a universe in which the central theme is both loss and hope. How people from various cultures (Planet bound humans vs space station human dwellers, true aliens versus humans long mutated into almost unrecognition, etc.. ) interact and what makes them the same and different yet still able to have enough commonality to share goals and dreams.

It's a coming of age book alongside epic adventure. It has humor and romance and tragedy and characters you truly grow to care about. It has interesting technology to marvel at and, of course, a long lost advanced civilization to wonder about.

I cannot recommend this book (and series) highly enough.

Read and enjoy.
I couldnt put this book down. Space Opera is by far my favorite flavor of Sci Fi. This is everything a space opera novel should be. The descriptions of space battles from the point of view of the bridge crews are sharp and detailed. The impression of shipboard life is reminiscent of a space born "golden age of sail", loved it. Something else I look for in a good sci fi book is strong development of alien (or human) cultures. The authors have put a lot of thought and work into developing far future human cultures (and very "alien" aliens), an imperial bureaucracy that is capable of spanning thousands of star systems (a Bureau of Archetype and Ritual!), and characters possessed of depth who are capable of growth and surprises. This book (and the series) weaves a complex story, if you are looking for a light read, this might not be the book to choose. If you want a rich story, character depth, conflict, and fantastic locations, grab a copy! I've been able to reread this book, which is unusual for me and I look forward to reading the e-book updates with new content.
