This story describes USAC sprint car racing in the early 1960s and a driver named Stan Bowman. It captures Bowman's win at the first USAC sprint car race at Eldora Speedway in 1962. Bowman also captured the attention of Clint Brawner, the legendary Indianapolis 500 mechanic of that era. The story is told through the eyes of Diane Beck Lane, who was daughter of Harold Beck, the owner of Bowman's race car at Eldora in 1962. In 2012, Eldora Speedway, now owned by Tony Stewart, honored the 50th anniversary of Bowman's victory and Diane Beck Lane now retells the legend of Stan Bowman in the golden era in USAC sprint car racing.

PURCHASED FOR MY DAD HE SAID HE LOVED READING IT!!!
A concise book with an interesting point of view by the narrator. Enjoyable read.
A good story, but very superficial. It could be a short chapter in a book about that era. The print is nearly large format so the 90 pages is really more like 45.
Still a good story and written with great care and appreciation.
In writing this book, John Lucas has opened a time capsule. What we find inside are the glory days of racing. The clock has been turned back to when it was imperative for drivers to display the same bravery as a jet fighter. Lucas, does a great job of telling the story of one brave warrior who dared to accomplish what many others had failed in trying. The lessons learned in this short story can be carried into everyday living. Enjoy the journey just as much as the destination for the destination is never promised but the journey is now!
Short story but, interesting about a driver taken too soon.
My Dad drove sprints and midgets during this era, and owned a midget that took the SRDA Championship for three years in a row. This book brought back many memories. I like the writing style, straight and to the point, with no rambling.
I wanted to give this five stars, because it's a five star story. But due to formatting foibles on my copy, I just couldn't honestly do it. The biggest letdown was only being able to see one of the twelve photographs at the end. I'm not sorry I bought it, though.
